Steirischer herbst '24, one of Austria's most prestigious contemporary art festivals, takes place from September 19 to October 13 in the Graz Region. This 57th edition, themed "Horror Patriae," delves into the complex issues of nationalism, identity, and the notion of "homeland." With over 400 events, the festival offers a dynamic program of performances, exhibitions, discussions, and cabaret, featuring both local and international artists.
At the heart of the festival is the Horror Patriae exhibition at the Neue Galerie Graz, a humorous yet critical reimagining of national museums. It examines how myths and narratives surrounding the idea of the fatherland are constructed. Contemporary art pieces engage with historical artifacts from the collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, creating a thought-provoking dialogue.
Performances such as The Phantom of the Operetta and A.E.I.O.U. bring artistic expression to the streets and public spaces. Festival highlights include the herbst Deathmatches, where essential future topics are debated, and the herbstkabarett, showcasing top-tier satire.
