Literaturtalk in der Bibliothek

What's better than a good book? - Sharing a good book with someone!!! There is an opportunity to do this at our quarterly “Literature Talk”.

Brexit is dividing British society and the whole of Europe - Coe's cleverly ironic comedy shows how this could happen. Benjamin Trotter moves to a romantic watermill in the county of Shropshire, in the heart of rural England, to finish the novel he has been working on for 30 years. His niece Sophie feels at home in multicultural London, but lives in the provinces after marrying her husband and feels a growing sense of unease; is he as xenophobic as his mother? Doug, a journalist and Labor supporter, is ashamed of his luxurious life in wealthy Chelsea, which hardly anyone can afford anymore. In the supposedly idyllic Midlands with its fixed values and traditions, a bizarre longing for Englishness arises, and a deep rift runs through all human relationships in this isolated part of the country. When did it all go wrong? This entertaining and finely spun social novel looks deep into the soul of Englishness.

Admission free! Registration is not required!

At our next meeting we will talk about the novel by Jonathan Coe: “Middle England”
